Periodontal diseases are an increasing health risk that affects a lot of people. Periodontal diseases can develop in stages, starting from gingivitis. If left untreated, the condition can get more severe, so it is important to consult a family dentist in Monterey as soon as possible.

What are the causes of periodontal diseases?

The mouth is always full of bacteria. To keep bacteria at bay and to have proper oral hygiene, you should brush twice a day, floss regularly, and get dental checkups at least twice a year. Poor oral hygiene is one of the biggest reasons for periodontal diseases.

Some other factors that can contribute to periodontal diseases are:

    • Smoking
    • Certain medications
    • Genetics
    • An illness or a compromised immune system
    • Hormonal fluctuations during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause

What are the stages of periodontal diseases?

There are four stages of periodontal disease. The symptoms get worse with each stage, so it is important to catch it early and get it treated. Some signs of each stage of periodontal disease are:

    • Inflammation

Periodontal disease starts with inflammation. The first stage is also known as gingivitis. Inflamed gums are more sensitive, and brushing or flossing may lead to bleeding gums. This first stage is harder to diagnose but is preventable if you maintain proper oral health and hygiene.

    • Early periodontal disease

The next stage leads to the receding of your gums. Your gums would create gaps by pulling away from your teeth. Bacteria cause periodontal disease, and the pockets created by these receding gums can give space to even more bacteria.

    • Moderate periodontal disease

In the next stage of periodontal disease, your gums would recede even more and can start causing pain in your gums and teeth. Your teeth may also start becoming loose due to the gums receding excessively.

    • Advanced periodontal disease

The last stage of periodontal disease leads to tissue loss. This includes your gums, bone, and other tissues that hold your teeth in place. At this stage, you are likely to lose your teeth. Using your teeth and eating would cause tremendous pain as well.

Speak to a skilled dentist today

If you have symptoms of periodontal diseases, such as inflamed or sore gums, it is your mouth trying to tell you that there is a problem. Periodontal disease is a very serious problem, and you should act before the problem gets worse. Consult a skilled dentist today and get the proper periodontal care you need.
