What’s the Difference Between Braces & Aligners?

There are several options for straightening crooked teeth. The two most common options are braces and aligners. While both may produce excellent results, they employ distinct techniques. While some people prefer braces, others prefer aligners. Murphy Orthodontics has an orthodontist in Louisiana that can advise you on the best solution. However, before we begin, the following list of distinctions may assist you in getting a sense of each piece of equipment.

What Exactly Are They Made Of?

Before you can grasp how any appliance works, you must first understand what it is made of and how it looks. Braces are made up of brackets affixed to the teeth and an archwire that passes through them. When the archwire presses on the brackets, the teeth shift into their new position. Braces come in a variety of materials, including metal, ceramic, and plastic.

Aligners, on the other hand, are custom-made, clear, detachable plastic devices that correct your teeth. No one will know unless you tell them since they are almost unnoticeable. Aligners are typically worn for two weeks before being replaced with the following pair in the series. Your teeth will progressively shift into position as you go through the aligner treatment.

    Time Frame of Use

Believe it or not, the length of time you should wear each product varies. Braces are typically worn for 12 to 24 months, whereas aligners are commonly worn for 6 to 18 months. The length of therapy, however, will vary depending on the severity of the problem. Patients with more severe misalignments will, on average, require lengthier treatment periods. Furthermore, braces may need to be adjusted on a frequent basis during therapy, adding weeks or months to the overall schedule.

    Routines For Brushing and Eating

When wearing braces, certain meals become more difficult to swallow. Sticky things like caramel can clog or pull your brackets, while hard items might damage the wiring. Brush your teeth thoroughly after eating to ensure that no food particles become trapped in your teeth. Water picks, and other specialized instruments will be required for flossing.

However, with aligners, you may remove the device while eating, so no food is off-limits. You’ll be OK if you brush your teeth before replacing them. You can floss on a regular basis while wearing aligners over braces.

How to Choose Which to Use

While aligners appear to be more convenient since they can be removed and worn for a shorter period of time, braces can be more effective in treating your teeth in some cases. They keep your teeth aligned even if you have severe gaps, crowding, or a large bite since they are tightened and readjusted on a regular basis.

Fortunately, your orthodontist will be able to help you comprehend each appliance better. People in Louisiana trust Murphy Orthodontics. Their orthodontists are available for consultation at their Metairie and New Orleans, LA locations. You will surely profit from the remarkable benefits of a straighter grin when you use whichever equipment you use to straighten your teeth.
